Class Descriptions

Classical Ballet: Ballet is the cornerstone for all other forms of dance. Strong technique will be developed through barre and floor work.

Classical Pointe: Only after a strong foundation is established in ballet can one go on to pointe.

Ballet/Tap Combo: This class offers young students a chance to learn two styles of dance in one hour.

Ballet/Jazz Partnering: Friday night partnering class requires a strong background in ballet and jazz. Some weeks we will focus on traditional ballet partnering (pas de deux) - and others we will groove with some jazz-inspired partnering.

Rhythm Tap
: Classes will focus on stong technique, exploring musicality and rhythm, an appreciation of the history of tap dancing, knowledge of the forefathers and current influences of hoofin', learning traditional/historical rhythm tap combinations (Shim Sham Shimmy, BS Chorus, Timesteps), and, of course, a bunch of flash steps thrown in at all angles. High energy - Self-expression - lots of smiles...
"Tap dancers don't dance because they want to, they dance because they have to."
-Gregory Hines

Broadway Tap: Classes will focus on strong technique, precision, style, and speed. Students will learn to work together as one unit, fostering stage presence, and being comfortable on stage.

Tap Jam: An open-level class that will encourage dancers to expore their own style and personality through tap dance improvisation. Pure fun through tap conversations. The studio will be set up in a cool atmosphere - no overhead lights - just a lamp and some candles with some live musicians occasionally stopping by to jam as well. This is a throwback to the old days of the Hoofer's Club in Harlem in the 1930s and 1940s. Oh...and bring your iPod or a cd - we'll throw on your music and jam to that too!

LyRaBop: The name means "Lyrical Dancing to R&B Music with elements of Hip Hop." This is a class developed by Lou Lasser to explore the way he likes to move to his favorite music. Students should have a ballet/lyrical background with an interest in hip hop - or vice versa. Challenging and cool...check it.

Hip Hop: This class focuses on style and rhythm. Hip hop music is the present and future (and past - it's been around for about 30 years)...so dress appropriately - no leotards and tights :) - Your clothes and shell toes.

Modern: An Alvin Ailey/Horton style modern dance class. (Modern dance, in a nutshell, is a free-form style of ballet/lyrical. The strict rules of ballet are thrown away for different strict rules of modern dance). Focus on a proper warm-up for body placements, finding and keeping your center, developing personal style, building a free and strong body, and finding new ways for your body to flow through the music and movement. A background in ballet is usually very helpful. At the end of each class, expect 5 minutes of pure relaxation that your body will welcome.

Lyrical: Ballet's liberal cousin - it's more interpretive and free-moving.

Swing Dancing: Couples and singles are welcome.
